On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which began in 2014. Witnessing the horrors of warfare and its impact on innocent people’s lives, we took the opportunity to highlight photography talents that work in an environment of immense hardship. A publication called MYPH can be considered a unique catalogue comprising current students of Mykolaiv Young Photography School. The institution was founded in 2018 by photographer and educator Sergey Melnitchenko, starting from his own hometown of Mykolaiv and lately spreading across all Ukraine and even abroad.

For the publication, Melnitchenko selected 63 artists, and together with Katia Lesiv, the designer of the book, they used the format of interviews to provide an insight into each artist’s perspective, to share their journeys, thoughts, and dreams in this difficult time of war. By showcasing these brave photographers, we hope to shed light on their unique talent and ignite empathy among our readers.

MYPH is a co-publication of RODOVID and MYPH and is available for purchase here.

MYPH

The school was founded by Sergey Melnitchenko in 2018. Their main task is to expand the scope of consciousness and understanding of modern conceptual and artistic photography among photographers. Deviating from the usual standards and doing something “different” is the main goal in the process of creating final projects. As part of the course “Art photography: from idea to visual realization”, the works of authors recognized in Ukraine and the world are studied, tons of photographs and photo books are viewed. Students learn about a huge number of photo contests, festivals, fairs and what needs to be done in order for their work to be published in Ukrainian and foreign magazines, as well as for photos to participate in exhibitions and, of course, to be sold. The school also invites various well-known photographers, curators and publishers with their lectures to broaden the range of knowledge of our students.

Rodovid

is a Ukrainian publishing house specializing in art-related publications, often also promoting talents through their dummy open calls.
